Many people travel to The Center for Natural Breast Reconstruction to support loved ones for their procedures. Of course, your loved one’s health is the number one priority, but the truth is that there will be times when you can take a break and let the patient rest and recover. Nearby Charleston is a great tourist destination with plenty of historical sites to see, plenty of things to do and great places to eat. Here are a few options for you and your family to enjoy:
Charleston City Market: One of the most popular attractions in Charleston, this public market is one of the nation’s oldest. It’s where over 300 entrepreneurs showcase their products, from artwork and books to clothing and tasty treats. Make sure you check out the stunning handcrafted sweetgrass baskets.
Charleston Tea Plantation: It doesn’t matter if you prefer coffee over tea or even if you drink tea at all. The Charleston Tea Plantation, which is currently owned by the Bigelow Tea Company, is still a fun and educational tour that’s located on the historic Wadmalaw Island, which cannot be commercially developed. Learn how it’s all made with a free factory tour then take a trolley ride ($14 for ages 12 and up and $7 for children up to 11) through the greenhouse.
Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie: Charleston is chock-filled with history and Fort Moultrie and Fort Sumter are must-sees for any history buff. Fort Sumter is only accessible by the concession-operated tour boat and it’s free to visit (the tour boat may have a nominal fee). There’s plenty to do, including the Junior Ranger program for the little ones, exploring the visitors' center and taking a nature walk. What will you find?
Finally, Thirty-Four West Theater Company is funky and fun! Owned by two partners and using a regular troupe of actors, each production is written, staged, costumed and produced by the duo. Check the calendar for what shows will be on when you’re visiting.
With all the walking and tours and things to do, you’re going to get hungry and Charleston is not short of delicious places to dine. The Caribbean-inspired Fuel Charleston was featured on Food Network's Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives back in 2012 and is still going strong. You can also try the farm-to-table restaurant, The Macintosh, where you can enjoy “The Mac Burger,” and shrimp and grits or how about some bone marrow bread pudding? Finally, if you’re traveling with little ones, they won’t be picky at the Five Loaves Cafe where grilled cheese and peanut butter and jelly are on their menu or if they are adventurous, they can branch out and try the restaurant’s Mexican chicken chili or potato, cheddar and broccoli soups.
