The SIEA Flap
Vascular Differences Determine Approach
Similar to the DIEP Flap (which is the most commonly used muscle sparing natural breast reconstruction), the SIEA is the preferred method for women who would benefit from a tummy tuck and whose abdominal blood supply comes from the Superficial Inferior Epigastric Artery. This artery runs just below the surface of the skin, allowing surgeons to harvest and reattach more easily than with the DIEP Flap. While only a minority of women has this vascular arrangement, the SIEA provides them a less invasive flap technique.
